Healdsburg Moves Forward with Commercial Cannabis Ordinance

March 21, 2023

Last night, the Healdsburg City Council approved the first reading of an ordinance that would amend the local municipal code to allow various types of commercial cannabis activity. Healdsburg is one of a few cities in Sonoma County that currently prohibits all commercial cannabis activity. However, in 2021 they began the process of researching and gathering community input for an ordinance to regulate cannabis uses within the City, and in November 2022 voters there approved a commercial cannabis tax of up to 8% of gross receipts.

The City Council also held a discussion last night about the proposed application process and materials for the two storefront cannabis retail permits that will be available, as well as a discussion about fee alternatives for storefront retail applications. Our Senior Associate Attorney Lauren Mendelsohn, who sits on the Boards of Directors of California NORML and the Sonoma County Cannabis Alliance, attended the City Council meeting to offer public comments on all three cannabis-related items.

You can read more about Healdsburg’s current and proposed cannabis policies and applications here. We look forward to working with the City as they move towards and into the implementation phase of this process, as well as working with clients seeking to operate in Healdsburg.
