Omar Figueroa

A pioneering cannabis lawyer with more than eighteen years of experience providing legal counsel and representation to members of California’s cannabis industry, Omar is an expert in California cannabis law and is frequently quoted in the media. Omar has taught several Continuing Legal Education (CLE) seminars to lawyers on cannabis-related topics, including legal ethics, MCRSA (Medical Cannabis Regulation and Safety Act) and Proposition 64 (Adult Use of Marijuana Act).

Omar graduated from Yale College, Stanford Law School and Gerry Spence’s Trial Lawyers College, and learned the craft from legendary San Francisco trial lawyer Tony Serra. Omar has also represented, on a pro bono basis, medical cannabis patients, computer hackers and activists facing incarceration for peaceful direct action.  He is a Founding Lifetime Member of the National Cannabis Bar Association (NCBA) and a Lifetime Member of the NORML Legal Committee.

He is the the author of Cannabis Codes of California, an upcoming book containing all of California’s cannabis laws in one indispensable reference volume.

Lauren Mendelsohn

Lauren Mendelsohn is an associate attorney with the Law Offices of Omar Figueroa. For the past several years, Ms. Mendelsohn has been active in the drug policy reform movement as well as other progressive and humanitarian efforts. She is the former Chair of the Board of Directors of Students for Sensible Drug Policy (SSDP), an international non-profit organization working to end the counterproductive “War on Drugs.” She is passionate about the environment, human and civil rights, science, and the arts.

In 2014, Ms. Mendelsohn helped launch Viridis Law Group™, a cannabis business law group located in Newport Beach, California. In 2015, she worked as a research assistant to the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Freedom of Opinion and Expression, where her projects focused on international legal protections for journalists, sources and whistleblowers. In 2016, while awaiting her Bar results, Ms. Mendelsohn worked as an intern for talented cannabis attorney Heather L. Burke in Nevada City, California.

Ms. Mendelsohn earned her J.D. from the University of California, Irvine School of Law in 2016 and her B.S. in Psychology from the University of Maryland in 2013. While in law school, she was part of the Community Economic Development Clinic and International Justice Clinic. She also helped launch a student-run needle exchange program and assisted with monthly expungement clinics at the local legal aid society. Ms. Mendelsohn was a member of many student organizations, including the Intellectual Property and Cyberlaw Society, the Biotechnology and Global Health Policy Club, Students for Sensible Drug Policy, and the National Lawyer’s Guild.

Ms. Mendelsohn is a proud member of the California State Bar, the Sonoma County Bar Association, the National Cannabis Bar Association, SSDP’s Sensible Society, California NORML, Americans for Safe Access, and the ACLU.
