Omar’s passion is defending human beings facing criminal charges in federal, state and juvenile courts, specializing in cannabis, counterculture, and cybercrime cases.
Mr. Figueroa has been a criminal defense lawyer since 1998, and has represented criminal defendants in Superior Courts all over the State of California. He has defended human beings in the following California counties: Alameda, Amador, Butte, Calaveras, Colusa, Contra Costa, El Dorado, Humboldt, Lake, Los Angeles, Marin, Mendocino, Merced, Monterey, Napa, Orange, Sacramento, San Diego, San Francisco, San Joaquin, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Solano, Sonoma, Stanislaus, Sutter, Tehama, Tuolumne, Ventura, and Yolo.
Mr. Figueroa has also represented defendants in several federal courts, including the Northern District of California (at the San Francisco, San Jose, and Oakland federal courthouses), the Eastern District of California (Sacramento and Fresno federal courthouses), the Central District of California (Los Angeles), the Southern District of California (San Diego) and the District of Wyoming (Casper).
Omar’s law offices are located in artistic, independent Sebastopol, in gorgeous Sonoma County, California. Before establishing a successful practice in Sonoma County in early 2010, he shared office space for over ten years with esteemed colleagues at Pier 5 Law Offices in San Francisco, a community of independent sole practitioners specializing in aggressive criminal defense. He considers himself lucky to have been trained by living legend J. Tony Serra, a master of the noblest art : defending the accused before a jury.
Mr. Figueroa is a member of the California State Bar, California Attorneys for Criminal Justice, Sonoma County Bar Association, California NORML, Cannabis Action Network, Americans for Safe Access, Stanford Alumni Association, Association of Yale Alumni, and a lifetime member of the NORML Legal Committee. He is also a member of the Board of the ACLU of Sonoma County.
In 2006, Omar graduated from Gerry Spence’s Trial Lawyers College, which is considered the most prestigious and selective trial advocacy college in America.
Lauren Mendelsohn is an associate attorney with the Law Offices of Omar Figueroa. For the past several years, Ms. Mendelsohn has been active in the drug policy reform movement as well as other progressive and humanitarian efforts. She is currently the Chair of the Board of Directors of Students for Sensible Drug Policy (SSDP), an international non-profit organization working to end the counterproductive “War on Drugs.” She is passionate about the environment, human and civil rights, science, and the arts.
In 2014, Ms. Mendelsohn helped launch Viridis Law Group™, a cannabis business law group located in Newport Beach, California. In 2015, she worked as a research assistant to the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Freedom of Opinion and Expression, where her projects focused on international legal protections for journalists, sources and whistleblowers. In 2016, while awaiting her Bar results, Ms. Mendelsohn worked as an intern for talented cannabis attorney Heather L. Burke in Nevada City, California.
Ms. Mendelsohn earned her J.D. from the University of California, Irvine School of Law in 2016 and her B.S. in Psychology from the University of Maryland in 2013. While in law school, she was part of the Community Economic Development Clinic and International Justice Clinic. She also helped launch a student-run needle exchange program and assisted with monthly expungement clinics at the local legal aid society. Ms. Mendelsohn was a member of many student organizations, including the Intellectual Property and Cyberlaw Society, the Biotechnology and Global Health Policy Club, Students for Sensible Drug Policy, and the National Lawyer’s Guild.
