About Our Team

Our team has committed itself to the growth and success of the commercial cannabis industry through quality legal representation. We specialize in the laws related to the cultivation, manufacture, distribution, and sale of cannabis products, both medical and recreational. Whether your business is a startup in need of business formations and licensing or an established competitor in need of regulatory guidance and contract creation – we are here to help your business thrive. Not only do we stay apprised of the myriad state and local regulations evolving throughout the state and its fifty-eight counties, we work with government bodies and industry members to improve law and policy relating to cannabis.

Omar Figueroa

Omar Figueroa is a pioneering cannabis lawyer who has been providing legal counsel and representation to members of California’s cannabis industry since 1998. He is the author of Cannabis Codes of California, the first comprehensive guide to laws and regulations governing the California cannabis industry and is frequently quoted in the media. Omar entered the cannabis industry as a criminal defense lawyer, where he tirelessly defended individuals charged with cannabis-related crimes. With the passage of cannabis legalization in California, Omar has expanded the firm to keep pace with the industry’s legal needs. Omar has presented at countless conferences, is frequently interviewed, and is widely regarded as an expert not only in the realm of cannabis laws themselves but also with regard to the proper manner of counseling cannabis companies.

Omar earned his Bachelor of Arts in philosophy from Yale College, his juris doctor from Stanford Law School, and is a proud graduate of Gerry Spence’s Trial Lawyers College. Omar also trained under legendary San Francisco trial lawyer Tony Serra. He is a Founding Lifetime Member of the National Cannabis Bar Association, a Lifetime Member of the NORML Legal Committee, as well as a proud member of the American Bar Association, the California State Bar.

Barbara Marland

Barbara Marland, our Office Manager, co-founded the firm with her husband, Omar, after assisting for many years in his previous law practice. Barbara graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. She and Omar are happy to be raising their two wonderful boys in Sebastopol.

Our Roots

For nearly two decades, Omar has devoted his life to defending individuals’ rights and fighting for justice. He is an outspoken advocate of cannabis reform and has helped author ordinances and voter initiatives to re-legalize the cannabis plant including Mendocino County Measure AF, the California Craft Cannabis Initiative, the Marijuana Control Legalization and Revenue Act, and the Repeal Cannabis Prohibition Act. He also authored the Cannabis Codes of California (now available on Amazon), a reference guide to the Golden State’s cannabis laws. Omar founded his office in Sonoma County’s progressive town of Sebastopol in 2010. Now, as California’s “Wild West” of cannabis comes to a close and the era of regulation has begun, Omar’s practice has expanded to include legal compliance services for the legal cannabis market. Omar and his team still give back to the community by sharing information, taking on Pro Bono cases, and writing Amicus Curiae briefs.
